Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases

Endocrine System:
The endocrine system consists of internal glands that produce and secrete hormones. These hormones regulate many functions of the body, including energy balance, growth, and development. The glands that make up the endocrine system include the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, pancreas, ovaries (in women), testes (in men), and adrenal glands.

Endocrinologist:
Endocrinologists are specialist doctors who diagnose and treat diseases of the endocrine system. Their training process lasts over 13 years, including internal medicine residency and specialized education in hormone disorders. Diseases treated include diabetes, thyroid disorders, metabolic disorders, hypertension, obesity, infertility, osteoporosis, and hormone imbalances.

Diabetes:
Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot process glucose for energy. There are two main types:

Type 1 Diabetes: Typically starts in childhood or adolescence and is characterized by a deficiency in insulin production.
Type 2 Diabetes: More common, usually occurs in adults, and is associated with insulin resistance.
Gestational Diabetes: Develops during pregnancy and usually resolves after birth but may increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later.
Thyroid Disorders:
The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism. Thyroid disorders include hyperthyroidism (excess hormone production) and hypothyroidism (insufficient hormone production).

Hyperthyroidism: Characterized by excessive thyroid hormone production, symptoms include restlessness, weight loss, and increased sweating.
Hypothyroidism: Characterized by insufficient thyroid hormone production, symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, and dry skin.
Hashimoto's Disease:
The most common cause of hypothyroidism, it occurs when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Treatment is usually with hormone replacement therapy.

Graves' Disease:
A common cause of hyperthyroidism, it is an autoimmune disorder that leads to excessive thyroid hormone production. Treatment options include antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine, and surgery.

Goiter:
An enlargement of the thyroid gland that is not cancerous. Often caused by iodine deficiency, it can lead to symptoms like swelling and difficulty breathing. Treatment options include iodine supplementation, radioactive iodine therapy, and surgery.
